More than a series of engaging anecdotes, The Family Business gives readers a glimpse into the real world of the private investigator, and how that profession's stresses can bear on family life. Funny, poignant, and informative, it taps into the bottomless curiosity readers and viewers have about the hidden aspects of life — both criminal and domestic.

This memoir tells the story of a multi-generational private investigation agency, founded by Phillip DiNatale, a former Boston police detective who was chosen to be one of four investigators tasked with catching the Boston Strangler.

There are revelations of some of the most interesting cases this family team has worked on over the past forty years — from cheating husbands and wives, to rape accusations, the theft of a Stradivarius violin and a Louis the XIV desk, large-scale gray-marketeering, missing children (including the son of an African dictator), wiretapping, and some widely publicized industrial accidents on Boston's "Big Dig."

The Family Business offers a look beneath the surface of city life, into the minds of those who break the law — from murderers and rapists, to welfare cheats and petty thieves as well as insight into families troubled by divorce, addiction, and secrets.

The Family Business eBook John DiNatale

This book is a straightforward story, simply told, of what it is like to be a family of private detectives in Boston. I found the tone to be gentle, loving and open - not what one might expect from a modern day, currently still practicing, private eye. It provides insight into the real, and sometimes mundane, world of a private investigator, and how that world includes a personal and family life that intertwines with the challenges of the profession. I enjoyed it enough to race through it in a couple of sittings. In an odd way, it might make for the basis of a movie or tv series, a counterpoint to the fantasy version of provate investigators unusually presented on the screen.

The Family Business eBook John DiNatale Reviews

A well written, non fiction, insight into a family detective business which came into existence, indirectly, from the famous Boston Strangler case. Many interesting details regarding the case which I was unaware of. But, it's not just about the Boston Strangler....it also details the real life experiences of private detectives and how they uncover details and track down information, etc. I highly recommend this book, it held my interest from start to finish.
Interesting to learn about the detective business. Loved that it was local for me.
This book was OK, but the stories had a detached feeling. I was hoping for a bit more. Not bad though.
I love that John DiNatale's voice is so clear in this book. John's father's story is vividly brought to life when he tells about the search for the Boston Strangler and how that one case influenced the lives of everyone in his family. In some cases it also shaped their futures. John's description of the loss of each of his parents, as well as, his little son touched my heart We have all suffered losses and John dedicates in his writing a place for each one. I also enjoyed the humor with the Boston accent! Bravo!
I enjoyed the historical aspect of this book. Boston back then is very different than the present day Boston. I remember the terror during that time, and reading about the Boston Strangler and to be privy to how the investigation took place, the time and leg work involved was interesting. However, there were sections of the book that I found very drawn out. I thought that the author at times was very self indulgent when talking about his talents, etc.
Fascinating story about a family of real world detectives. Jim Rockford would be delighted to hear John's stories of his detective agency. The book is well written and reads like a good novel. The story behind the story on the Boston Strangler investigation is very compelling and provides numerous details I had never heard before. But I also enjoyed the funny anecdotes about the landlord and her husband, the various "undercover" cases, and especially the interaction with the Feeble Bureau of Investigation. All in all, a very enjoyable read.
John, as a "local," I never knew you wrote this book until I was looking for some Boston Strangler information. I enjoyed it and read it over a weekend and loved it! The local color and your family stories were entertaining and a few sad. Well, great job and hope you write another one! Oh one funny thing...you drove a Camaro??? Really!! Ha ha!
